BAA’s Ashe, NY’s Pallardy Win Cape Cod 26.2

It was 54-degrees, cloudy with negligible wind as the 35th
annual Cape Cod Marathon set out from Falmouth Green.

For the 30th and final time, retiring RD Courtney Bird gave
last-minute instructions and Falmouth TC prez Bob Richards oversaw the firing
of the traditional cannon start.

The BAA’s Eric Ashe, Whirlaway’s Brandon Newbould and Ben
Mears of the Western Mass Distance Project took out the pace.

In the women’s race, former professional triathlete and
ultra ace Karen Pallardy, 27, of
NY took the lead with Whirlaway’s Helen Dinan and former Open champion
Mary-Lynn Currier in pursuit.

With Mears falling off, Newbould stayed with Ashe‰ÛÓrunning in
his debut marathon‰ÛÓuntil 15 miles.

“I had planned on making a move,” said Ashe. “But it never
happened. I didn’t surge ahead or anything, I just kept going at the same pace
and the course sorted things out.”

Although buttressed by a headwind on Shore Drive (yes,
tropical storm Sandy was on the way and the wind had picked up) Ashe, 24, still
powered to the finish line relatively fresh in 2:26:13. Newbould, 31, followed
in 2:28:19. Scott Leslie of Central Mass copped third in 2:31:01 (Top 25 M&W

Pallardy, whose first road race was a 50-miler was thrilled
with the course. “It was amazing,” she said. “The scenery was beautiful and the
course was challenging. I’d hoped to run 2:49 but that was before the hills and
the wind in the last two miles.”

Pallardy bested the women’s field in 2:52:30. “I’m very
happy with my race,” she said. “I had a time in mind but what I really wanted
was the win.”

Dinan, 32, posted up second in 2:59:14. With Currier a dnf,
Merideth, NH’s Abbey Gosling, 26, of CMS placed third in 3:07:30. Whirlaway’s
Christin Doneski, 41, of Hopkinton, NH, placed 4th among women and as first
Master in 3:09:33.

Following the race, the brave of heart headed to the
Falmouth Inn on Main St. for the NER sponsored party featuring the BA HA
Brothers & $2 Off Shore Ale.
