DAVIE, FL — A Miami man has been arrested in the killing of an 8-month-old puppy who was shot to death with a sniper rifle-style pellet gun in Davie. Johansen Concepcion De La Ros faces a felony animal cruelty charge in the shooting Saturday evening near Southwest 73rd Way and Southwest 30th Street.
A woman was walking her daughter’s dog Princess along a trail around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when the dog was struck, police said. Police officers found the woman covered in blood and holding the dog’s limp body, the news outlet reported.
Witnesses told police two men the shot came from a nearby balcony and that two men ran inside shortly after the shot rang out. Officers visited the apartment and found the 19-year-old suspect inside with a scoped pellet rifle.
“He took a knee, lined up the cross hairs, and took a shot killing the little dog,” the Davie Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. Concepcion De La Ros remains jailed on $2,500 bond.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported the dog was a chihuahua puppy. The dog began crying and pulling on the leash when after the shot rang out.
“We heard the pop, but it didn’t register that someone had shot the dog,” Roshelle Pearson, who bought the dog pup for her 8-year-old daughter, told the newspaper. She added there was blood in the dog’s mouth. She died within minutes.
The dog was taken to an animal hospital where an exam was done, police said. The pellet traveled through the dogs chest, killing her.
The family had just moved to Florida a day earlier.
