UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A vestige of Yorkville’s past is one step closer to becoming dust.
Demolition permits were filed this week for a small, two-story midblock building at 1477 Third Ave., between East 83rd and 84th streets, according to city records.
The building has stood since 1895, according to the date emblazoned on its facade, but the city’s zoning and land use map claims it was built in 1915.

In its place, a 15-story building will rise, according to plans filed over a year ago.
The new, 152-foot-tall building will only have nine apartments, according to the filing. That means each apartment will contain an average of 2,700 square feet, in addition to roughly 1,600 square feet of commercial space.

Developer Noam Shemel purchased the building in July 2022 for $8.5 million and had advertised the recently renovate two-story space for rent before filing a building permit that December.
It will be designed by BKSK Architects, whose other projects include the Children’s Museum of Manhattan on the Upper West side, the National Museum of Mathematics in NoMad, and the expansion of the old Tammany Hall Building at 44 Union Square.
Plans show the 25-foot-wide building will contain front balconies as well as a small rear yard.
The two-story building was formerly home to a yoga studio and gym, and also hosted a home furnishings studio and a Radio Shack in recent years.
