Dragons Finish 2nd at Virginia Duals; Bosch Named Outstanding Wrestler

HAMPTON, Va. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team finished second in the American College Division at the Virginia Duals on Saturday in Hampton, Va. The Dragons opened the day with a 24-16 win over Ferrum College in the semifinals before falling to No. 17 Kutztown 32-3 in the championship match.

Dragon junior Blake Bosch was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the American College Division after going 3-0 on the week.

The Dragons are now 4-2 in duals on the season. They are ranked No. 25 in the latest Basford rankings while Kutztown is 17th.

In the championship match, Bosch recorded the lone win for MSUM. He beat Kutztown’s Anthony Petril, 7-1 at 133 pounds.

The Dragons lost two other matches by one point and another in overtime. At 149, Dragon junior Isaac Novacek fell to Kutztown’s Joe Esposito, 6-5 while freshman Adam Blees lost a tough 7-6 contest to James Meyer at 165. At 157 pounds, Matt Martoccio edged MSUM junior Garret Hoffner, 8-6 (sudden victory).

Earlier in the day, the Dragons beat Ferrum, 24-16, thanks to pins from freshman Jared Goldsmith (125) and redshirt freshman Kristian Vazquez (141). Bosch also won by technical fall at 133.

Goldsmith got the Dragons off to a strong start with a pin of Bailey Cooper in 2:13 at 125 to make it 6-0. Bosch followed with a win by technical fall over Justin Zimmerman to give the Dragons an 11-0 lead.

The lead grew to 17-0 when Vazquez pinned Jacob Bonds in 1:28 in 141.

Ferrum won at 149 and 157 to cut the lead to 17-6. Blees got MSUM back in the win column with a 9-1 major decision win over Hubert Alston at 165 to extend the advantage to 21-6.

Ferrum rallied with three straight wins to cut the Dragon lead to 21-16 going into the final match. At 285, junior Nader Abdullatif clinched the dual for MSUM with a 3-2 win over Tate Delany.

Virginia Duals American College Results

The Dragons open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season on Thursday at Minnesota State. The dual begins at 7 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
