MANHATTAN, IL — A driver involved in a rollover crash Wednesday afternoon in Manhattan was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted from the scene, Manhattan Fire Protection District officials said.
The accident happened around 2:15 p.m. on Route 52 and Scheer Road, Manhattan Fire Protection District Chief Steve Malone said.
The car rolled several times before coming to rest in a ditch. The driver—identified only as a female—was ejected into a nearby cornfield. Illinois State Police were called to the report of a two-car crash. The incident is under investigation as a possible hit-and-run, with no identifying information on a second car available.

A medical helicopter was called to transport the driver to a Level 1 trauma center, Malone said. Rte 52 was closed for approximately 30 minutes, allowing the helicopter to land on the pavement for better access to the driver.
The extent of the driver’s injuries is not known, Malone said. She was the sole occupant of the car.
