The ex-Three Lions captain believes it is up to Gareth Southgate to aid the develop of an exciting talent as his club side are doing him few favours

England have to keep picking Marcus Rashford, says Stuart Pearce, with international football offering “salvation” to a promising forward amid his struggles at Manchester United.

After bursting onto the scene at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal and making a stunning start to his international career, a Red Devils academy graduate was expected to become an established star for club and country.

Rashford has, however, struggled for consistency and momentum at United with Jose Mourinho at the helm, with his game time limited as he faces fierce competition for places.

He has remained an important part of the England set-up, but a lack of sharpness was apparent again in his most recent outing as he squandered a number of golden opportunities in a 0-0 draw with Croatia.

Former Three Lions skipper Pearce believes Gareth Southgate has to keep faith with the 20-year-old as international football is providing the vital learning curve being denied him at a domestic level.

A man with 78 caps to his name told Sky Sports ahead of Monday’s Nations League clash with Spain: “Harry Kane picks himself and you’ve got to keep playing Marcus Rashford.

“At the moment, I watched United against Newcastle and he didn’t have a very good game. I’ve got to say that.

“If anything, for the sake of English football, we’ve got to keep progressing his career I think.

“It’ll be a salvation for him to meet up with England and get away from Manchester United because of the cloud that’s at the club at the moment.

“He’s playing some games, he’s in and out the team a little bit.

“I think England could be a salvation to get him back on the pitch.”

Rashford has taken in 28 appearances for England to date, netting five goals.

“He scored twice for us last month [against Spain and Switzerland] and we love him to bits, so he’ll take more of those chances than not.”
