LI Band Final Call Releases New Single, 'Perfect Day': Listen

HUNTINGTON, NY — Final Call, a Huntington-based pop punk band, released its new single, “Perfect Day.”

“The song is about putting on a happy face and acting optimistic in the face of adversity and challenges, even though inside, you’re really struggling, and you might not want to reach out to people who might be there for you,” lead singer Pat Carroll told Patch. “We’re tackling some tough subject matter in this song, just from our own personal experiences.”

A lot of friends and family members of the band members have been “dealing with a lot,” inspiring “Perfect Day,” Carroll said.

“I think each of us has this imposter syndrome sometimes where we’re always trying to please people and look toward the next thing,” he said. “Some of it is self-deprecating and being in an environment where you’re not understanding your own self and your own emotions, and you’re expected to do all this stuff for the outside world, which can be difficult.”

Carroll provides the lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Greg Diem plays lead guitar, Evan Brandow is on the drums, while Paul Vomvas plays bass guitar.

Carroll and Diem primarily wrote “Perfect Day” when it came to the melody and lyrics, though the songwriting process is “largely collaborative” currently, Carroll said.

“Our process is more, we bring ideas and concepts, riffs and chords to each other and kind of hash it out as a band discuss what it could look like,” Carroll said. “Much more collaborative. The initial idea and main lyrics and riffs and whatnot came from myself and Greg.”

“Perfect Day,” as well as the band’s previous single, “High School Romance,” are pre-cursors to the theme of an album the band is working on.

“[The album] kind of follows the theme of a quarter-life crisis,” Carroll said. “We’re all working our full-time jobs now. Life just continues to be crazy and get in the way of things. Especially in the post-COVID environment. We’re all just dealing with a lot of sh–.”

Carroll said he can “definitely picture” Final Call’s next album dropping by summer 2025.

Final Call has a couple upcoming shows in the fall, but following that, the band plans to work on its sophomore long play album.

“We’re looking to jam together a lot and hash out a lot of these great song ideas that we have, so we can put together a full and comprehensive album that follows a thematic storyline, just get into the studio, record it and release it as soon as possible,” Carroll said. “We already have those two singles. It’s going to be building off of that as much as we can in the next year or so.”

The band’s debut long play, “Final Call,” was released in 2022. Before that, the band released two extended play albums: “Suburban Summer” in 2018 and “What Lies Ahead” in 2016.

Final Call has been significantly influenced by a variety of artists across the spectrum of rock and roll, including bands such as Green Day, Blink-182, ‘Yellowcard, Linkin Park, The Beatles, Oasis, Avenged Sevenfold, State Champs, Neck Deep, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, Nirvana, My Chemical Romance, and The Foo Fighters.

The band’s musical style has progressed through the years, according to Carroll, as Final Call tries to balance the bands it is inspired by and discovering its own unique sound. The band has evolved its sound to incorporate more styles, including emo, alternative rock, soft rock, and techno.

Carroll previously said that with each new song or album, Final Call is trying to expand out of the genre and put its own finishing touches in its art, whether it is a signature bass line, drum line or vocal technique. While the band draws on a bevy of inspirations, Carroll said the goal is to widen the gap between Final Call and the bands its members were inspired by.

“Perfect Day” fits the evolution, as Carroll said the song takes lots of influences from pop punk bands while taking its own path.

“It really does sound like a song that could be off of Green Day’s [album] ‘Dookie,'” Carroll said. “Just in terms of intensity, volume and the speed and everything. I think The Final Call touch is just us each putting in our own flair and style. In this song specifically, we tried really hard to have each band member showcase some of their ability in different pieces. The drums are very fast and very powerful. Greg had some great riffs. I do some different types of vocal melodies. I try to change the melodies and the words in each of the verses’ choruses. You can hear a bunch of great; like Paul filling in bass lines. He just does a really great job. I would say the Final Call spin on this is taking that traditional 90s pop punk vibe and bringing it into the modern day and talking about things that have happened to a lot of us in the last couple of years and showcasing the band’s abilities in ways we haven’t before.”

Final Call has toured Long Island and New York City over the past year, including playing the top bill of the Rock Against Cancer show for pediatric cancer charities Maggie’s Mission and Olivia Hope Foundation at The Nutty Irishman in Farmingdale in June.
