Lionel Messi still on Inter Miami’s radar says coach Phil Neville

Phil Neville, manager of Inter Miami, has not given up on the prospect of signing Lionel Messi, according to RMC. Despite reportedly being close to an extension at PSG, the Argentinian has been linked with the MLS side in previous transfer windows.

On more than one occasion, the name Inter Miami has appeared in conjunction with the World Cup winner. Reports over the last couple of seasons have hinted at Messi’s potential retirement in Florida. Neville, the former Manchester United and Everton defender and current manager of the Floridian team, has done little to quash such reports. Asked about the subject on Monday before the MLS restart, Neville expressed his hopes: “Any agreement for a DP (Designated Player) at this level can be complicated… [But] why not? I believe it could happen. Players all over the world see the MLS as a great league. If Messi were to come, that would make me happy, because I like playing with – and learning from – the best.”

Departing the French capital for the southern United States is less than likely, however. Messi is currently tied with Les Parisiens until the summer, with an optional extra year. And, according to information from RMC Sport, an agreement in principle exists between the two parties that could see his contract extended by the end of this month.

The 35-year-old playmaker returned to PSG training last week, just over two weeks after winning the World Cup with Argentina in Doha. Messi, who topped the GFFN 100 for 2022, is expected to resume his league season on Wednesday against bottom-placed Angers (9pm KO).
