Machete-Wielding Man Shot By Police In Calabasas Was Homeless: Police

CALABASAS, CA — Authorities have identified the suspect who wielded a machete during a confrontation in Calabasas and was subsequently shot by police as a 35-year-old homeless man.

The medical examiner’s office identified the man as Benjamin Pritchard.

Los Angeles Police Department officers were called to the area of West Calabasas Road and Mulholland Drive at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, officers found Pritchard, who had attacked someone with a machete in a McDonald’s parking lot, police said.

“The victim was able to disarm the suspect from his machete, but the suspect then armed himself with a knife,” the LAPD said in a tweet.

Pritchard ran into the nearby busy Sagebrush Cantina restaurant. Officers tried unsuccessfully to subdue the man with a taser multiple times. He continued into the restaurant’s patio area, at one point turning and facing the officers with a knife in hand, police said.

Officers eventually shot him. He died at a hospital, according to police.
