In the recent mass layoffs by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., where 12,000 workers across multiple divisions were fired, several accounts of individuals affected by it have surfaced. One such case of a married couple being fired by the tech giant has come to light where the woman was availing her maternity leave.
Parents to 4-month-old baby
As per a Business Insider report, high school sweethearts Allie and Steve, parents to a four-month-old baby, were employed by Google for the past six and four years, respectively.

Allie, the ex-marketing manager at Google, got her parental leave following the birth of her first child in 2022. She was planning to avail eight months of leave in total.
Her husband, Steve, a research operations manager, also opted for two months of paternity leave in late 2022 and had planned for a break of two more months in March.
Couple grateful for coworkers and Google’s policies
The couple became aware of the news that the layoffs hit them simultaneously. Upon receiving the information, they praised their coworkers and heralded Google’s employee benefits.
The couple were especially grateful for the parental leave policy, which encouraged them to work with the company in the first place. Allie has revealed that many companies got in touch with them and offered jobs after the information of the couple’s layoff became public.
But the couple, who are entrepreneurs in their capacity, plan to build their explainer video business – White Cube Media – which they started in 2014.
On January 22, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, announced that it would lay off nearly 6% of its staff. Following this, many employees took to social media to reveal the shocking ways in which they were told about the pink slip.
Another Woman Laid Off A Week Before Maternity Leave
To support the fired employees, the company offered six months of healthcare, job help, and immigration services. Another woman, Manager Katherine Wong, a former Google Program Manager, made a similar claim in her LinkedIn post.
Wong, who is eight months pregnant, shared that she was fired a week before her maternity leave was to commence.
“The first thought that came to my mind was “Why me? Why now?”. It was hard to process and digest…It is almost impossible for me to look for a job as a 34-week pregnant and right about to go on maternity leave for months,” her post read.
On Monday, CEO Sundar Pichai said that top executives at Google will face pay cuts this year as part of cost-cutting measures.
