UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A new, sprawling family-run corner cafe is about to host a grand opening celebration this weekend.
Avenue Bakery, a new spot run by a father-daughter team, has announced their grand opening for this Saturday, offering free swag, music and giveaways for excited patrons.
First reported by Patch, the opening of the new corner cafe at 1477 Second Ave. at the corner of East 77th Street will reunite the formerly subdivided spaces — recently home to Zazzy’s Pizza, Nook Room and café Innocent Yesterday’s, all of which closed last fall — restoring the corner to its pre-2020 status as an inviting café and bakery.

“UPPER EAST SIDE, let’s gooooo!” the bakery wrote on their Instagram page. “TONSSSS of giveaways alll morning so line up early! WE CANT WAIT”
Co-owner Misha Punwani, 29, told Patch in December about the plans she and her father, Raj, have to make the spot an all day “oasis for everyone,” she said, whether you’re meeting up with friends or looking for a spot to finish up your homework after school.

“We’re going for something that is cozy and inviting,” Punwani said “that’s our primary goal.”
The pair and business team currently run nearly 15 franchises of the popular bowl and smoothie shop, Playa Bowls, with at least six location in New York City.
One of their franchises is on the very same block as their future unnamed bakery café, making the family duo already very familiar with the neighborhood and the comings and goings-on Second Avenue.
The large, undivided space was the longtime home to a Le Pain Quotidien, which closed in 2020.
The family is also planning on opening another Avenue Bakery location on the Upper West Side in the coming months at 2321 Broadway, on the corner of West 84th Street.
