Trumbull Holiday Tree Lighting Offers Festive Fun For Families

TRUMBULL, CT — Trumbull’s annual tree lighting ceremony, a popular local event that typically draws in thousands of spectators, will be held Friday night at Town Hall, officially kicking off the holiday season for many residents.

According to Recreation Program Manager Noreen Wilpiszeski, the holiday tree lighting has become one of Trumbull’s most popular events.

“Last year, for example, we had well over 3,000 spectators,” Wilpiszeski said to Patch. “There is a gleeful energy that builds before the jovial moment the switch is flipped to light up the gazebo, trees and surrounding area. It is a real-life movie magic moment.”

Planning for this year’s event, which is usually held the first Friday in December, actually started in late summer. According to Wilpiszeski, the Parks and Recreation Department began collaborating with the Long Hill Fire Company and performers at that time to work out the timing of the event.

“Our event coordinator, Erica Pivor, has collaborated with a variety of other town departments to ensure proper safety measures will be implemented, and also to execute the timing of the event,” Wilpiszeski said. “Additionally, the parks department starts decorating in October. They string up all of the lights and are responsible for the upkeep of the Town Hall gazebo and green.”

The event, which is held “rain or shine or snow,” will feature a number of musical performances, as well as a photo booth opportunity that will allow visitors to take pictures inside a Trumbull snow globe. Hot chocolate and snacks will also be available

“We are excited to have performances by Harmony on the Sound and the Madison Middle School Band [this year],” Wilpiszeski said. “Additionally, our master of ceremonies will be Mr. Tyler Cohen.”

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and will also act as a lead-in for the newly formed Trumbull Community Theater’s first production, “A Christmas Carol.”

Featuring music by Alan Menken and Lynn Ahrens and a cast of 87 Trumbull community members, the show’s first performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Trumbull High School auditorium. Subsequent performances will take place Saturday and Sunday.

“Due to school availability and the availability of our performers,” Wilpiszeski said, “we are hosting the events back to back…allowing families to go from one event to the other to kick off the holiday season locally.”

Wilpiszeski encouraged all local and area residents to attend the celebration Friday night and help kick off the holiday season in Trumbull. She also noted the popular event is a great way for people to get better acquainted with their neighbors in a fun and festive setting.

“Each year we see more and more handheld babies at their first town event and well behaved dogs decked out in festive attire,” Wilpiszeski said. “My staff and I love being a part of the community’s holiday traditions.”
