WALNUT CREEK, CA — A fire last week that nearly destroyed a Walnut Creek condominium was accidental and was caused by a barbecue, a spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said Tuesday.
“The exterior fire in a barbecue spread to nearby combustibles and into the condo,” Con Fire Steve Hill told Patch. “Prior to our arrival, the reporting party indicated the fire had spread, first to the nearby condo, and then that the entire condo was on fire.”
The fire department was notified at 8:28 p.m. Thursday, May 11, of the fire in the 100 block of Sierra Lane, near Walnut Boulevard and Ygnacio Valley Road.

Heavy smoke was coming from the residence and the entire two-story condo was ablaze when the first crew arrived at 8:32 p.m., Hill said.
“They immediately called for a second alarm because of the threat to adjacent dwellings,” Hill said.

“As a result of aggressive fire attack, the incident commander was able to report knockdown on the fire at 8:45.”
Reports at the scene indicated the residents of the condo had self-evacuated. The fire department did two more searches of the unit and at 8:50 p.m., confirmed no one was inside.
“Fire extensively damaged both floors of the two-story condo, which also extended into the attic before being extinguished,” Hill said.
Damage was largely limited to one unit where three people lived. The Red Cross responded to offer assistance to the two adults and one minor who lived in the condo.
A fire investigator concluded his investigation after mop-up and confirmed the fire was accidental and was caused by the barbecue.
All told, about 50 Con Fire personnel were dispatched to the incident: three fire trucks, eight fire engines and a multitude of other personnel.
