Weekend Movie Review: 'Dolittle' And 'Bad Boys For Life'

This weekend, the classic tale of a man who could converse with animals comes to life in “Dolittle,” starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular reclusive veterinarian who is flocked by a menagerie of animals day in and day out.

Fans of the “Bad Boys” franchise should definitely check out the third installment, “Bad Boys for Life,” in which Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return to their iconic roles as an unlikely pair of wisecracking police detectives.

Here’s what to see and what to skip this weekend:

Movies Out This Weekend

“Dolittle” — Robert Downey Jr., Selena Gomez; directed by Stephen Gaghan

The latest reimagining of Hugh Lofting’s classic tale of a man who could converse and listen to animals comes to life in “Dolittle,” a story about empathy, compassion and perseverance.

In the new film adaptation, Robert Downey Jr. portrays the titular role of Dr. John Dolittle, an eccentric veterinarian who has turned into a virtual recluse, wallowing in his sorrows at his namesake manor for nearly seven years since the death of his wife, Lily (Kasia Smutniak).

Over time, his constant companions have been a coterie of animals, including a giraffe (voiced by Selena Gomez), a gorilla (voiced by Rami Malek), and a parrot named Poly (voiced by Emma Thompson) who has become the hermit’s most trusted confidante.

The main plot takes front and center when the young Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley) mysteriously becomes gravely ill. The queen believes that the only person who can cure her is Dolittle, who gets a message from the queen’s lady-in-waiting, Lady Rose (Carmel Laniado) about the queen’s plight.

And so begins Dolittle’s adventure to find the cure.

Skip it. The screenplay doesn’t feel genuine enough to awaken one’s imagination. Seemingly, the equilibrium state of comic moments versus dramatic moments appears to be in disarray.

“Bad Boys for Life” — Will Smith, Martin Lawrence; directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah

In this third installment of the buddy-cop series, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunite to reprise their roles as an unlikely pair of police detectives. Their names, Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, have become legendary and even synonymous with mayhem, car chases and snappy one-liners at the Miami P.D.

Nearly 17 years after “Bad Boys 2,” the new film sees our action heroes at a monumental crossroads, as they ponder lives and careers. Unsurprisingly, Lowrey (Smith) feels they still have the crime fighter’s mojo at hand, but Burnett (Martin) feels otherwise — that is, until the duo encounters their most formidable foe yet.

With the help of a new generation of young guns, Lowrey and Burnett set off to vanquish a drug lord’s widow (Kate del Castillo) and her son (Jacob Scipio) — both of whom have an old score to settle with Lowrey.

See it. With their infectious chemistry, comic hijinks and bickering charm, Smith and Lawrence are on fire as always. Plus, the action-comedy adventure is full of high-octane entertainment.
