•Closing Commentary
AEW’s first event is the talk of the wrestling industry. While this is great for the business as a whole, is it great for the smaller companies like ROH? The old adage is that a rising tide lifts all boats. While it seems like that will be the case for the wrestling industry, does anyone know for sure that this will actually happen?
In one weekend AEW has more clout and prestige than ROH has had in 17 years. If you disagree with me, I would like to have a debate with you. I am a huge ROH fan. I mean, I write a weekly recap for the company because I enjoy following it. With two promotions now active and in search of talent, what happens to ROH?
More so than that, who in ROH is able to make news in the way the WWE and AEW talent are able to? Jon Moxley has taken the IWC by storm with his episode on Talk Is Jericho; when is the last time that someone other than Cody and The Young Bucks have made even 5% of Moxley’s impact on the Wrestling fanbase?
Is there anyone currently in ROH that has even a shred of star power? When I say star power, I mean within the hardcore wrestling fanbase. Try to think of one performer that you feel has any reach outside of ROH TV, Honor Club events, or on Twitter. Does your friend ever text you, “OMG, did you see that video Matt Taven did? Did you hear that Podcast that Shane Taylor was on? Did you see Rush on Instagram?”
I am not saying this is the end-all be-all for ROH and its performers, but the lack of newsworthy things happening outside of ROH, as well as the feeling that you really never need watch ROH live, has hurt the company. But, just like WWE, it appears that ROH is happening to coast by. Here’s to hoping ROH gets a positive bump as a result of AEW.
