West Coast Chicken Chain To Make Newington Its First CT Eatery

NEWINGTON, CT — A fast-growing hot chicken chain is expanding into Connecticut with Newington set to become the first one in Connecticut.

The Newington Plan & Zoning Commission Wednesday unanimously approved a special permit for franchisee John Coughlin, owner of LuLu & Bru’s Chicken Coop LLC, to open a “Dave’s Hot Chicken” franchise at 3384 Berlin Turnpike, Newington.

The 2,700-square-foot, fast-casual restaurant would serve up all sorts of chicken sandwiches and chicken meals and sides, part of a growing trend of chicken eateries nationwide.

Zoning board members approved the application after a public hearing Thursday in which the project was unveiled.

Other than a presentation by the applicant and property owner, the application drew no other public comments.

It will be part of a shopping plaza that also includes a Town Fair Tire, with the “Dave’s Hot Chicken” occupying space that was an automotive batteries store and a prominent doughnut/coffee chain.

Hartford Attorney Bob Martino, who was representing the property owner, 75 Airport Road Associates Limited Partnership, said the new owners of the site have invested in facility improvements.

Among those, he said, are a new roof over Town Fair Tire, and a new, paved parking lot.

According to the Town of Newington’s zoning office report, the restaurant will have counter service and indoor dining for 45 guests.

The chicken eatery will occupy space that once was a Dunkin Donuts (1987-2017) and a now-shuttered Batteries and Bulbs store, wrote the town.

Following the presentation from the applicants and some discussion, the PZC easily voted to support the permit application with conditions, paving the way for the eatery to be built.
