WWE 205 Live Results (7/23): Tampa, Florida

The July 23, 2019 edition of 205 Live takes place at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, FL.

Recap of last Tuesday’s epic argument between general manager Drake Maverick and Mike Kanellis that led to a physical exchange. In case you missed it, Kanellis berated Maverick for his lack of focus on the 205 division, and his obsession with the 24/7 championship. Maverick would later challenge Kanellis to a match with a future title shot at stake. Cut-to Maverick, who cuts a promo on Kanellis, stating that next week they are required to get out every bit of aggression on each other so both men can move on. He then tells Kanellis that the match is unsanctioned.

Vic Joseph and Aiden English welcome us to another edition of 205 Live. Joseph tells us that Nigel McGuinness is at the NXT UK performance center. Tonight’s show takes place in Tampa Florida. Lucha House Party make their way to the ring for our opening contest. Kalisto and Gran Metalik will be competing, with Lince Dorado accompanying them at ringside. They’ll be facing…the duo of Humberto Carrillo and Raul Mendoza.

Lucha House Party versus Humberto Carrillo & Raul Mendoza

Kalisto and Mendoza begin. Tie-up. Mendoza with a wristlock…Kalist cartwheels away to reverse the pressure. Headlock from Mendoza. Nice sequence of counters from both men. Mendoza shows off his athleticism…Kalisto responds with a headscissor but Mendoza fires right back with a frankensteiner. First strikes of the bout landed by Kalisto. Each man exchanges an arm-drag and a dropkick. They have a stalemate staredown. Metalik and Carrillo tag in. Metalik snatches on a waistlock. He transitions into a headlock. Carrillo off the ropes…he handsprings out of an attack. Metalik with a monkey-flip but Carrillo lands on his feet. Crowd into this. Metalik goes for a handshake, then kicks Carrillo in the gut. Quick-tag to Kalisto for some tandem offense. Metalik right back in…chinlock. Kalisto tags…they target Carrillo’s elbow with a kick. Lucha House Party in and out wearing Carrillo down.

Crowd tries to rally Carrillo to make the tag. Kalisto with an elevated superkick for a nearfall. Carrillo manages to Irish-Whip Kalisto in his team’s corner and brings in Mendoza. Wheelbarrow slam combo by Carrillo and Mendoza squashes Kalisto. Cover…only two. Kalisto connects with a couple of up-kicks and brings Metalik back in. Metalik uses Kalisto to hit a missile dropkick. He applies a standing armbar onto Carrillo. Corner lariat, followed by a rope walking dropkick with pin…Carrillo kicks out at two. Springboard headbutt by Carrillo and now both men are down. Kalisto and Mendoza back in. Pace picks up…Mendoza with a shifty escape to the apron…top rope dropkick by Mendoza. Everyone hits an enziguri…Mendoza with a springboard enziguri nearly wins the match. All four men going at it…Metalik with a superkick to Carrillo on the apron. They end up on the top rope. Metalik with an incredible frankensteiner but Mendoza breaks up the pin. Mendoza then sends Kalisto to the outside and nails a tope con hilo. Back in the ring…Metalik goes for a moonsault…Carrillo gets the feet up! He drags Metalik to the corner…corkscrew moonsault. It’s over.

Humbert Carrillo & Raul Mendoza win by pinfall

Backstage the Singh Brothers are still mad at Brian Kendrick and Akira Tozawa for stealing their Academy Award. They call themselves the best tag team in the division, and challenge Tozawa and Kendrick to a tag matchup next week.

A vignette promo on Isaiah “Swerve” Scott is played. Highlights of his recent NXT television debut is shown. He prepares to face the cruiserweight champion in tonight’s 205 main event.

Flashback to last week’s main event between Chad Gable and Jack Gallagher. Gable emerged victorious after connecting with the O’Connor Roll German Suplex. Commentary refers to it as one of the best matches in 205 Live history. (No complaints here)

Oney Lorcan is out for our second bout of the night. His opponent…Tony Isner…is already in the ring.

Isner lands a stiff jab and unloads a flurry of strikes onto Lorcan. Lorcan angrily throws Isner into the corner and lights him up with chops. Running corner elbow. Another one. Isner looks rocked…running uppercut by Lorcan. He calls for the half-and-half suplex…he hits it. This one is over quick.

Oney Lorcan wins by pinfall

Promo from the champion, Drew Gulak. He says he’s been looking for a challenger, but no one in 205 was brave enough to accept his invitation. He then talks about Isaiah Scott, who he reveals he trained back in their EVOLVE days. He tells Swerve that he admires his courage, but that he has a lot more to learn.

Commercial for tomorrow night’s NXT, featuring an epic clash between Keith Lee and Damian Priest. A WWE Shop advertisement follows.

The unsanctioned Drake Maverick and Mike Kanellis match is made official for next week.

Main event time. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott makes his way out first, looking confident in his 205 debut. The champ is out second. Here we go.

Drew Gulak versus Isaiah Scott

Gulak opens strong with a dropkick. He brings Swerve to the mat with a headlock. Swerve shows off his mat wrestling skills but Gulak regains good positioning before breaking away. NXT chants from the crowd. Swerve applies a headlock…Gulak pushes him to the outside. Back inside…Swerve with a takedown and arm-ringer. Snapmare by Gulak but Swerve uses his quickness and gets the better of Gulak. Dropkick sends the champ to ringside. Gulak attempts to whip Swerve out but he handsprings and lands on his feet. Cartwheel moonsault from Swerve lands. More ground wrestling. Swerve breaks out of a waistlock and hits a BIG right hand that nearly knocks Gulak out. Leg kicks by Swerve…Gulak goes after the right hand. Swerve tries to recover on the outside…Gulak in quick pursuit…he whips Swerve into the barricade, then places him on the announcers table for a huge chop. Gulak now in control.

Gulak sends Swerve into the ringpost with a Razor’s Edge. Back inside he goes for the pin…two count. Single-leg crab. Gulak drives his boot onto Swerve’s head and neck to gain more leverage. Gulak climbs the middle-rope…jumping lariat connects. Pinfall but only two. Gulak sets Serve up in the corner…he goes for another Razor’s Edge…Swerve has it scouted this time. Jumping uppercut. Swerve to the top…another uppercut. He catches Gulak with a frankensteiner out of the corner. Drive by kick from Swerve nearly wins the match. Crowd really behind Swerve. Gulak rips at the hand, then locks in the Gu-Lock. Swerve in trouble…he manages to sneak a foot under the ropes to break the hold. Swerve hits a superkick to Gulak on the apron…running double-stomp. He climbs to the top…double-stomp! Cover…Gulak somehow kicks out! This is awesome chants break out.

Gulak with a sunset flip out of nowhere…Swerve breaks free and hits a tilt-whirl-slam…right into an armbar! He can’t lock it in fully because of the right hand. Back and forth striking…Gulak with a modified neckbreaker, followed by the cyclone neckbreaker. Swerve can’t kick out.

Highlights of the match are shown, including the haymaker that Swerve may have legitimately hurt his hand on. Gulak talks trash to Swerve, then stands tall.
