Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, appeared to be in a damage control mode after IFFI jury president and Israeli director Nadav Lapid called controversial film ‘The Kashmir Files’ a “propaganda, vulgar movie”.
In an “open letter,” Gilon suggested that Lapid should be ashamed of what he had said about the film.

Gilon feels that the statement Lapid has its impact on the cultural relations between India and Israel.
“You will go back to Israel thinking that you are bold and “made a statement”. We, the representatives of Israel, would stay here. You should see our DM boxes following your “bravery” and what implications it may have on the team under my responsibility,” he wrote.

Gilon reminded Lapid that the latter should not let his personal political stand come in between strong bilateral ties between India and Israel.
My suggestion. As you vocally did in the past, feel free to use the liberty to sound your criticism of what you dislike in Israel but no need to reflect your frustration on other countries. I’m not sure that you have enough factual basis to make such comparisons. I know I don’t.

Lapid had said that the screening of Kashmir Files at the festival “disturbed and startled” the jury.
“All of us were disturbed and shocked by the movie The Kashmir Files. It felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie that was inappropriate for an artistic, competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel comfortable to share open disfeelings with you since the spirit of the festival can truly accept critical discussion,” Lapid said.

His statement has drawn heavy criticism as the movie was very well received in India. Veteran actor, Anupam Kher, who worked in the film compared it to the famous holocaust movie “Schindler’s List”.

The Kashmir Files was released in March 2022. The film aims to portray the lives of Kashmiri Pandits who allegedly had to suffer terrorism in the valley. Many of the Pandits had to flee the valley to save their lives. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the film was showcased in many parts of the world and got mixed reactions.
Kashmiri Pandit groups in India, however, dubbed the film as a commercial project that could not help their cause at all.
