The millennial generation might be glued to their smartphones and Instagram accounts, telling the world what they ate for lunch, but they are also the generation that is on the cusp of great change, which they are instrumental in bringing about. While the world has dissed millennials for being the most lazy generation, what they forget is that this generation is bringing about changes in an otherwise confused world. Here are 11 ways millennials are changing workplace ethics and for good.
1. Switching Jobs
Millennials would rather have horizontal growth by switching jobs and getting a level up, than vertical growth by staying in one company over years and waiting for promotions. Horizontal is quicker and definitely more satisfying.
2. Salary Hike During Job Jumps
Millennials expect salary hikes from employers when they switch jobs and therefore, they are setting a trend where employers now offer a salary boost to their new employees, sometimes even more than internal salary hikes of the company.
3. Perks And Some More Perks
Millennials work for money and perks. Unlike, earlier days, they demand perks because after all, we are all making money to survive in this world, and have a decent lifestyle to keep up with. Perks often make a deal or break a deal for a millennial.
4. Purpose And Scope
It’s extremely important for millennials to know that what they are working for has a purpose and scope. They expect quick result and if not quick, they want results. They need to know that whatever they are working for is actually serving a purpose.
5. Growth
Growth is extremely crucial for a millennial at the workplace, especially quick growth. Most companies in India are currently running on the age-old model of promotions every three years, but that’s just too long for a millennial.
6. Managers Vs Millennials
Millennials don’t want managers, they want mentors, who are approachable and can help them. Mostly managers are from a different generation than a millennial, so it’s extremely important for a millennial that their manager understands their thought process. They want their mentors to make it a two-way process.
7. Quality Over Quantity
Millennials believe in quality over quantity of work. In a world where information is in abundance, it’s important for a millennial that his job offers quality to its users than quantity. While, most companies still choose quantity over quality, there are a few who prefer quality over quantity.
8. The ‘Work From Home’ Norm
The millennials brought in the ‘work from home’ norm which is actually quite useful. It saves time and resources, in turn making the millennial at work much more efficient than he would have been sitting at office.
9. Inclusion
The concept of inclusion was unknown a few years ago and now it’s coming back. If the manager is a millennial, they’ll include their team in the decisions they are making. The process of taking important decisions alone is now coming to an end.
10. Comfort Over Everything Else
Millennials choose comfort over everything else. The rule of wearing formals is now eventually dying out. People work according to their own timings, in what they are comfortable wearing and whichever place they’d like to work from.
