After his win over Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open on Sunday, recalled the two team competition events he played last year, the Laver Cup featuring Roger Federer and the Davis Cup semifinal against Croatia.
Both times he lost as a team – Team World in Laver Cup, United States in Davis Cup – but he enjoyed competing. Tiafoe said he headed into the Laver Cup being very tired after losing to Croatia, which was proven by a straight-set loss to Team Europes Grigor Dimitrov. If I could do it again, how much I love Laver Cup, I probably should have taken that off.
Playing Grigor, I was done. I was done not really physically but emotionally. Obviously having something like that, youre putting everything on the line for your country, you come up short, you have to play a guy of that caliber indoors on a hard court in a matter of days.
But, yeah, Laver Cup is a hell of an event, a great event. They treat us like kings there. Davis Cup, it still hurts, honestly. I havent looked at Borna the same again. I cant wait to see him across the net. Im going to be coming in, be on him like white on rice.
Yeah, he aint getting no his or nothing till I beat him, said Tiafoe. Tiafoe gets inspired to the NBA star LeBron James. Does he pattern his character to basketball players? Its funny, people say that.
I just got that kind of walk. I always walk like that. Always walk on my toes. Seems like theres, like, a swagger to it. Thats how I really, like, walk and carry myself. Pops always said, Carry yourself with some confidence always on and off court, whatever youre doing.
I dont know, he just always taught me that. Thats kind of why I do it. But definitely people can feel it on the other side of the court, I believe. Once you start going like this (putting your head down), your opponent can feel that, get energy from that and kind of run with it.
