Speaking on Eurosport the former world No. 1 gave his view on four-set win over Denis Shapovalov at the Australian Open. Wilander believes that Djokovic got distracted for noticing that lights were turning off at 5:00 PM.
It was an incident when the lights came on in the Rod Laver Arena, and the umpire explained the TVs needed it because otherwise it would be too dark there, said Wilander. The lights are very bright and were not needed.
Shapovalov started making a few more winners, the second set was close, at times he was at the same level as Djokovic, Shapovalov was dictating play but then he made some mistakes. Wilander also admitted that it was a particular and dangerous match for the Serb: I found not easy to play against lefties.
In my day there were John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas, but I did not mind the serve coming back to my backhand because I had a good backhand. With a great backhand, you have an easier time with left handers.
Wilander also spoke about the third round matches played by Big 3 against younger players: It was great to see these matches, but in a way we got the wrong mix. Its the wrong match up. We dont want the most risky player Shapovalov to play against the most solid player Djokovic.
And we did not want De Minaur, that hasnt really an aggressive player, to play against Rafael Nadal. Tomorrow Stefanos Tsitsipas has the most finest game and Roger Federer who has the most finest game too. But he is ready more than the others.
