NYC allocates $250K to help low-income women obtain abortions

The city has secured $250,000 to pay for abortion services for low-income women who do not have access to safe and affordable health care, lawmakers said on Friday.

The one-time allocation of funds from the City Council will be given to the New York Abortion Access Fund and was championed by the Women’s Caucus in the chamber, according to Councilwoman Carlina Rivera.

“This initiative not only makes New York the first city in the nation to directly fund abortion services, but also lets any American who is facing increasing abortion restrictions in their home state know that they can come and get the services they need in the Five Boroughs,” Rivera (D-Manhattan) said in a statement.

“This fund is just another signal, another example of how New York State and New York City has to be that leader on this issue. We all are picking up this torch for people who have come before us and we’re not heeding any call to any one person, this is a collective movement.”

The abortion access fund provides payment to clinics on behalf of low-income women who can not pay for the services. Roughly a third of the fund goes to women who come to New York for abortions, according to The New York Times.

City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer called the allocation a chance for the city to be a “true beacon for reproductive rights in our nation.”

“When we called on City Hall and the Council to directly fund abortion care in the Fiscal Year 2020 budget,” Stringer said.

“I was proud to stand outside City Hall with [National Institute for Reproductive Health] and a coalition of advocates to call on the City to make this crucial commitment to ensuring abortion is safe, legal, and accessible to people regardless of ability to pay.”

Some female council members who worked on the issue dismissed Stringer’s effort to take partial credit for securing the funding.

“While we appreciate the allies, we appreciate genuine allies,” Rivera told The Post.
