Tyler Skaggs, starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, dies at 27

Tyler Skaggs, a 27-year-old starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, died in Texas on Monday, the team said.

Skaggs was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in his hotel room at around 2:18 p.m., according to the Southlake Police Department in Texas

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family,” read a statement from the team.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.”

No foul play was suspected and a cause of death was not revealed.

Cleveland Indians ace Trevor Bauer, who played with Skaggs in the Diamondbacks organization, remembered the pitcher on Monday night.

“We came up together. We won together. We laughed and celebrated together. Today, we all lose and mourn together,” Bauer tweeted.

The pitcher started in a game against the Oakland Athletics on Saturday. He allowed 2 runs over 4 1/3 innings in a 4-0 loss to the team.

Skaggs had a 7-7 record in 15 games with the Angeles this year. The starting pitcher recorded a 4.29 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 79 innings.

The player was drafted in the first round by the Angels in 2009. He signed a one-year 3.7 million contract with the team for 2019, according to a compiled list of baseball contracts.

The Angels canceled their scheduled game on Monday night against the Texas Rangers.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said he was “deeply saddened” by Skaggs’ death.

“We will support the Angels’ organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler’s teammates and other members of the baseball family,” Manfred said in a statement.

The tragic incident took place 10 years after rookie Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others were killed by a suspected drunk driver.

The driver in the Adenhart crash was convicted of murder and sentenced to 51 years in prison in 2010.

Skaggs was born in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Woodland Hills, in the far western part of the sprawling San Fernando Valley. He graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2009, when the Angels drafted him in the first round.

The Angels traded Skaggs to Arizona in 2010, and he started his big-league career with 13 appearances over two seasons for the Diamondbacks. The Angels reacquired him in December 2013, and he has won 25 games over five seasons with the club.
