‘Walking Dead’ fans distraught over sudden ending of comic

TV’s favorite comic book is dead.

“The Walking Dead,” the post-zombie apocalypse comic book series and source material for AMC’s blockbuster show, is ending abruptly with the 193rd installment of the morbid thriller.

“Dead” author Robert Kirkman, a Marvel alum, announced the conclusion of the graphic drama, which is sold in over 60 countries in more than 30 languages. The final comic, a super-sized 84-page edition (they are usually about 32), will be released tomorrow for $3.99— with the last six pages featuring an essay by Kirkman.

“I hate knowing what’s coming,” wrote Kirkman. “I hate that you can feel when you’re getting to the end of a book, or a graphic novel.” On cutting off the macabre series just shy of the 200th book, Kirkman writes, “I just love this world too much to stretch things out until it doesn’t live up to what I want it to be.”

Though he wrote that he’d hoped readers would understand, superfans took the news hard. “The only good thing in my life, gone,” wrote one reader on Twitter, while another simply mused, “Damn it Kirkman.”

The previous two editions saw protagonist Rick Grimes die, a shock to fans who had followed the sheriff-cum-zombie-killer and his son, Carl, since 2003. Grimes dies at the hands of spoiled survivor colony “Commonwealth” prince Sebastian Milton.

The hit AMC franchise inspired two spinoffs, “Fear the Walking Dead,” now in its fifth season, and another still unnamed show centered around two teens, premiering sometime in 2020. Three standalone films following Grimes, who appeared in seasons one through nine, played by Andrew Lincoln, have also been announced by AMC.

The question remains, will AMC continue to beat an undead horse?
