California hit by significant 6.4-magnitude earthquake

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake on Thursday struck Southern California, about 150 miles northeast of Los Angeles, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake near the city of Ridgecrest — the largest to hit the region in two decades — made buildings in LA rock for several seconds, according to CNN.

There were no immediate reports of deaths, but multiple people in Ridgecrest suffered minor injuries — mostly from broken glass and falling shelves — and a state of emergency has been declared in the city as aftershocks continue to rumble through the area, officials told the outlet.

As of 1:15 p.m. local time, more than 100 aftershocks of 2.5 magnitude or greater had been recorded, according to the USGS — which warned that there is a 20 percent chance of a shock of magnitude 6 or higher hitting over the next week.

Photos posted to social media showed local stores with products strewn across the floor, while the general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest told CNN the hotel was badly damaged.

“The chandeliers are still swinging,” Diane Ruggiero said five minutes after the temblor hit. “The floor rippled.”

The quake was the largest in Southern California since the 7.1 magnitude Hector Mine quake at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base in 1999, according to the LA Times.

The 6.6-magnitude Northridge quake in 1994 killed dozens and caused billions of dollars in damage. But that quake struck in the center of a populated area, while Thursday’s event was located far from the metropolitan LA area.

Several Hollywood figures took to social media Thursday to share their earth-shaking experiences.

Among those who chimed in was director Ava DuVernay, who tweeted: “Been living in Los Angeles all my life. That was the longest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. Not jerky. Smooth and rolling. But it was loooong.”

She added: “It was so long I thought for the first time ever ‘Is this the big one?’ Damn. Respect Mother Nature. She’s the boss.”

Comedian Trevor Noah said simply: “That earthquake was not fun.”

“We felt a lil’ movement here in the valley, but all good,” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tweeted. “Prayers to those in D valley, Bakersfield, S Valley, Kern etc. Be safe, stay prepared. #mothernature.”

Mariah Carey said: “I was like… Do I roll out of bed and get to the doorway? I’m from New York, I can’t handle this!”

The USGS said the quake — which initially was reported as magnitude 6.6 — was very shallow, at 5.4 miles, which would have amplified its effect.
