Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez complained Thursday that it was unfair for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to single her and three other female freshman Democratic lawmakers out for criticism — and warned that the repercussions could be dangerous.
“It’s singling out four individuals, and knowing the media environment that we’re operating in, knowing the amount of death threats that we get, knowing the amount of concentration of attention, I think it’s just worth asking why,” she told CNN.
Pelosi on Wednesday warned AOC along with Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley to knock off the Twitter attacks on their fellow Democrats.
The four progressive Democrats — all women of color — have been at odds with Pelosi, a long-time San Francisco liberal who has emerged as an unlikely voice of moderation in her caucus.
The New York lawmaker’s comments came before Pelosi returned to the subject of her beef with the so-called “Squad,” saying that she had the support of her entire caucus when she upbraided the four for critical comments on Twitter, since deleted, by an AOC staffer.
