We will be featuring similar features on other promotions each week and each will be updated weekly.

•Top Stories of the Week

  • WWE announced the first ever “WWE Worlds Collide Tournament” that will be taking place at Royal Rumble Axxess in Phoenix. This tournament will feature five members of the NXT, 205 Live, and NXT UK brands. The tournament will start with a battle royal where the winner will receive a first round bye in the tournament and order of eliminations will determine seeding. The announcement on WWE.com did say that this will be taped for a WWE Network special, but at this time it’s unclear how much of this will be shown. The winner of the tournament will earn a future title opportunity. The article asks the question “what championship will he choose to go after” which seems to indicate that any championship can be chosen and not strictly the top title on the designated brand of the winner. • From NXT: Adam Cole, Velveteen Dream, Dominik Dijakovic, Keith Lee, and Otis Dozivic
    • From NXT UK: Mark Andrews, Tyler Bate, Travis Banks, Jordan Devlin, and Zack Gibson
    • From 205 Live: Cedric Alexander, Humberto Carillo, Tony Nese, Drew Gulak, TJP
  • WWE announced the opening of the UK Performance Center last Friday. In the WWE.com article they describe the facility as a 17,000 sq. ft. building with two training rings, and strength and conditioning equipment. This is the first WWE Performance Center that is located outside of the United States. Charlotte, Finn Balor, and United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne were all in attendance and spoke at the unveiling. • 205 Live is going to be airing at 10:00 PM EST, immediately after Smackdown concludes, on Tuesdays again. WWE announced this decision on 1/13 and this change started this week after the 1/15 episode of Smackdown. They are going back to airing the show live after Smackdown, they had been taping it before Smackdown began. WWE is still going to re-air 205 Live on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM EST before NXT for any viewers who want to watch it in that timeslot. SOURCE
  • Alexa Bliss announced on Raw that the Women’s Tag Team Championships will be won at the Elimination Chamber PPV event in February. Three tag teams from Raw and three from Smackdown will compete in an Elimination Chamber match to crown the new Women’s Tag Team Championships. WWE.com posted an article reiterating what Alexa announced on the show and you can read that HERE.
  • Bobby Lashley won the Intercontinental Championship on Raw this week.

Monday Night Raw

  • Vince McMahon takes away Braun’s number one contender status. Braun Strowman was chasing Baron Corbin through the backstage area and Corbin took cover in the limousine we saw Vince arrive in. Braun destroyed the limo busting out windows and ripping the door off to get to Corbin. Vince would punish Braun by telling him he’s been fined $100,000 for the damages and Braun responded saying that the “piece of crap” limo wasn’t worth that much. Vince was angered by this and told Braun he’s been stripped of his title shot. Braun then flipped the limo in frustration.
  • Finn Balor is the new number one contender for the Universal Championship. Balor will now face Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble. After Braun was stripped of his Universal Championship opportunity, people waited in the back for a chance to talk to Vince about being the new number one contender. In a later segment Vince went to the ring to announce who the new number one contender was. Vince was then interrupted by John Cena, who was interrupted by Drew McIntyre, who was interrupted by Baron Corbin, who was interrupted by Finn Balor. All four men made a case for being the new number one contender so Vince decided to book a Fatal Four-way match for the main event of the night. In a backstage segment Jinder Mahal was able to convince Vince that he deserves an opportunity, so Vince decided that if Mahal could beat one of the four men of his choosing already in that match, he could take their place. Mahal selected Balor, but would lose the match. In the main event Balor would pin John Cena to earn the Universal Championship match at the Royal Rumble.
  • Bobby Lashley beat Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins in a Triple Threat match to become the new Intercontinental Champion. During the match Seth and Dean would work together at times to take out Bobby Lashley. The match ended when Lio Rush grabbed the top rope sending Rollins out of the ring as he went for the Stomp on Dean, Lashley would then hit Ambrose with a spear for the win.

Smackdown Live

  • Becky Lynch addressed if she is really ready for Asuka only to have Asuka interrupt her. Becky was asked backstage as she arrived to the arena if she was “ready for Asuka” and she responded she would answer that question in the ring. After stopping to take a drink a smoothie Otis Dozivich was making while The New Day looked on that consisted of tuna, raw eggs and shells, a ton of protein powder, and a pancake, she made her way to the ring. Becky talked about how everyone in the locker room tries to discredit her, but she always delivers on what she says, unlike Asuka. She talked about Asuka going into Wrestlemania last year undefeated and unbeatable saying no one is ready for Asuka, but then she lost. Becky said “not only did she lose, but it shook her to her core and she fell off the radar.” Becky then said Asuka couldn’t beat the woman she’s been beating for the last five months then Asuka’s music hit. Asuka responded to what Becky said by saying she’s like a bee without a sting and after the Rumble, she won’t be in Charlotte’s shadow anymore because Becky will be in her shadow.
  • A.J. Styles came out to ringside and immediately headed up to the concession stand through the crowd. He said the fans paid their hard earned money to be there, so let them do what they want and eat what they want. A.J. threw out some free A.J. Styles shirts and was attacked by Daniel Bryan. After a quick brawl, A.J. would put Daniel Bryan through a table filled with food and condiments.

•WWE Social Media Highlights

WWE posted an article about the new women’s tag team champions including an image of the new title belts.

Becky Lynch sets her sights on Asuka on Twitter this week.

Carmella and Sonya Deville also exchanged tweets this week which we were told would lead to a match between the two on Smackdown this week. That match did not take place.

WWE posted this quick video of R-Truth, Carmella, and Corey Graves interacting at WWE Headquarters during their Mixed Match Challenge all-expense paid vacation.

Vince McMahon tweeted this out in response to the crowd at NXT UK Takeover Blackpool who were chanting “Are you watching Vince McMahon” during the show.

Daniel Bryan did not take too kindly to A.J. Styles encouraging the fans to continue to eat hotdogs. He tweeted this video and picture before Smackdown went off the air.

•Closing Commentary

I love the idea of the WWE Worlds Collide Tournament at Phoenix. I find it very interesting it’s the three shows that Triple H is in charge of that will be involved. This is exactly the type of thing designed to be put on the network. My wish is that it would be streamed live for people at home to tune in to if they so choose, or they can watch it on demand. To me, with your own network, there’s no reason not to stream it live! Instead they’re going to do another network special like the Starrcade special, which is very disappointing to me. I don’t want to see a couple matches from this tournament; I want to see them all! In the headlines, I listed all the participants, and there is some exceptional talent there that I would love to see wrestle each other! Maybe they will put the whole thing up – just not air it live – but it didn’t seem that way to me when I read it. I hope I’m wrong. This just seems like the perfect event to live stream to your network. You’re already recording, so why not? If it ends up being a highlight show or just a match or two, I think people will be very disappointed because that will seem like such a waste.

Finn Balor appearing at the NXT UK show was a very cool moment! For those who didn’t watch, Balor fought Jordan Devlin at the first ever NXT UK Takeover event. Devlin was scheduled to fight Travis Banks, but after an attack earlier in the day and then again right before the match began, Finn Balor came out as the surprise replacement for Banks. Finn was already in London and spoke at the opening of the WWE UK Performance Center, so it wasn’t much of a shock that he would have been at the Takeover event in Blackpool as a spectator at minimum.

I thought they did a good job of explaining why they had a replacement ready for Banks and why Finn Balor would’ve been dressed for competition so quickly. NXT UK General Manager Johnny Saint and his assistant Sid Scala walked out onto the stage and said they thought Devlin might try something like this after the attack earlier in the day so they had a backup plan in place, then they introduced Balor. It’s a minor detail to acknowledge why a WWE main roster wrestler would’ve been dressed for competition with no notice and it’s the minor details, like this example, that give me hope for a Triple H run main roster. Vince wouldn’t have even bothered to have them explain why Balor was there and ready to wrestle; he’d have just had Balor’s music hit and gone about the match!

I’m really hoping that Becky Lynch being put in the championship match at the Royal Rumble doesn’t mean she won’t be in the Royal Rumble match. Ideally, I’d love Ronda to cost Becky the championship again. Becky can then enter the R.R. match later in the night and then win it. I think after she wins it, she’s still so angry about Ronda costing her the championship for a second time, she calls Ronda out on the spot in a post-match interview. I think that would be an awesome way to get to Ronda and Becky at Wrestlemania, and I think it would do wonders for the Becky Lynch character.

There are two major things that I think may keep this idea from working or happening. The first being that this would definitely be a Ronda heel turn. If Ronda goes out and costs Becky the championship for a second straight time completely unprovoked by Becky, Ronda is absolutely the heel. I don’t see how anyone could think Ronda is a baby face if she costs someone the championship for a second straight PPV and that person isn’t even on her brand. When Ronda did it the first time at T.L.C., it was viewed as revenge for Becky’s surprise attack on her leading up to Survivor Series, so you could keep Rousey as a baby face who was just getting payback. To do it a second time, it’s no longer payback; it’s being a heel, and I’m not sure if WWE is ready or willing to turn Ronda Rousey heel yet. I think this is evident when you look at the build for Ronda’s championship defense against Sasha Banks at the Royal Rumble. Ronda has done nothing but praise Sasha Banks during the build to their match, and this week on television Sasha was the one leaning heel when she overreacted to a harmless comment Ronda made about how beating Sasha would be her biggest accomplishment in WWE so far.

The second thing that makes me worry that this may not happen is WWE’s ability to keep this feud fresh and interesting for so long. Ronda vs. Becky is something everyone wants to see. In just a few short weeks they built up the match they were supposed to have at Survivor Series to be the main event of the show in most people’s eyes. Can they do that again for the ten week period between Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania? A major issue with keeping the Ronda-Becky feud relevant for so long is that they are on separate shows. So they won’t really be able interact with one another unless they come to the other show. One thing they could do is send Becky to Raw since she’s challenging the Raw Women’s Champion, but I’m not sure they’d do that. The other issue with keeping this feud hot is the fact that there are two other PPVs (Elimination Chamber and Fast Lane) between Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania where both Becky and Ronda will surely be having a match on at least one of those two PPVs. I hope this doesn’t deter them from having Becky win the Royal Rumble and select Ronda. I just hope they have a good plan in place to keep their feud relevant and keep the fans excited to see them finally collide at Wrestlemania.
