Newborn who stopped breathing saved by deputy during traffic stop

A South Carolina deputy got more than he bargained for during a traffic stop in Summerville, when he wound up saving the life of an infant who had stopped breathing.

The 12-day-old was being rushed to the hospital by her mom when Deputy William Kimbro pulled over the speeding car.

The driver explained to Kimbro that the baby, named Ryleigh, wasn’t breathing after drinking from a bottle. Kimbro sprung into action, performing CPR on the baby in a dramatic episode captured on his body cam footage and later posted to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

“Come on baby, cry for me, cry for me. Come on, open those eyes sweetheart,” he said.

Ryleigh started crying, and Kimbro continued to perform CPR until paramedics arrived.

“Officers went by and checked on her a few days later and she was doing well,” said Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carli Drayton, according to reports.

Kimbro was awarded a “life saving medal” by his department.
