Graydon Carter, the former Vanity Fair editor in chief, will let fly his new weekly newsletter creation Air Mail on the morning of July 19.
Carter has backing from private equity giant TPG, which he said “is the majority owner” as well as some “family and friends.”
He’s looking to get subscribers to pay $50 for an annual subscription or $15 for a quarterly.
“The mission is to produce a sprightly Saturday morning digital weekly that is international in flavor and easy on the eyes,” Carter told Media Ink. “My best guess regarding audience is that it will be made up of people with active passports and an understanding of the world beyond our borders.

“We are looking for people who want a pure read on a Saturday morning, without the jumpy distractions that so many news sites have.”
He’s pulled heavily from former staffers to man the project, which has 15 full-time staffers. Among them are Deputy Editor George Kalogerakis, who worked with Graydon at Spy and VF; Deputy Editor Chris Garrett, who worked with Graydon at VF; and Chief Marketing Officer Emily Davis, who worked on the publishing side for VF.
Carter said the debut issue has a single sponsor, Hermès, and it is being blasted to about 20,000 potential subscribers.
