Taylor Swift just dropped a new single from her upcoming album.
Called “The Archer,” the dark, synth-pop ballad was released with a fuschia-colored lyrics video via Instagram Live and YouTube on Tuesday.

Unlike the two previous singles from her album “Lover,” to be released Aug. 23, “The Archer” is more subtle and soft in tone.
Swift released the first single from the album in April: a chipper song called “ME!” with Brandon Urie from Panic! At the Disco that came with a candy-colored music video.
In June, she released the song and video for “You Need To Calm Down,” an upbeat dance song about LGBTQ rights timed to Pride festivities.
The 29-year-old wrote the new hit “Archer” entirely on her own, making it more intimate than “ME” or “You Need To Calm Down.” It was produced by Jack Antonoff, who was also behind Lorde’s 2017 album “Melodrama.” “Archer” has a slightly similar feel to that moody record.
In the song, Swift sings about being both the hunter and the prey in her love life. “The Archer” can also be interpreted as Cupid holding a bow.
In her livestream on Instagram, Swift wore and also unveiled merchandise tied to the song, which includes a necklace shaped like an arrow. Also available: a cropped sweatshirt, tie-dyed T-shirts, a pink hat and mugs emblazoned with the archery-inspired logos as well as song lyrics. The pop juggernaut also revealed that the deluxe version of the “Lover” album, available only at Target for $16.99, will include a journal with 120 scans of pages from her personal diaries, as well as blank pages for her fans to write in.
In “The Archer,” Swift compares dating to combat. “Easy they come, easy they go,” she croons. “I jump from the train, I ride off alone.” Darker lyrics include that, in love, she “cut off my nose to spite my face.” It’s a humble number in which she questions why anyone would want to be with her.
Swift’s checkered romantic past has been a point of interest for years, eliciting media and fan interest and giving her songwriting fodder for both heartbreaking and gleeful tracks off prior albums.

MTV VMA nominees 2019: Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande lead the list
It will be a battle of the pop princesses when…
In “The Archer,” it seems, she’s finally had enough of the dating game. “Help me hold on to you,” she sings.
Swift has been uncharacteristically coy about her current boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn. The two have been linked since 2016, though they’ve rarely been seen in public together the last three years. (Except, notably, at the British Academy Film Awards, also known as the BAFTAs, which they attended together in February of this year in support of Alwyn’s role in “The Favourite” — even though the London-held awards show was the same night as the Grammys.)
Tuesday was a busy day for the pop princess, who with Ariana Grande led the list of just-announced VMA nominations.
