Players were not like Novak Djokovic in the 90s, says Amritraj

In an interview, explained why tennis players career was shorter in the past. Now several players enjoy a big success after turning 30 years old, which was not always the case before. Tennis was not everything for many of us because physically we were not like Djokovic, even if I was 1.93 meters tall.

I last played Wimbledon in 1990, then I reduced my tournaments schedule, said Amritraj. Amritraj also encouraged India to have a bigger success in singles: The focus has to be on singles for India. We need four good singles players.

There is no point just having good doubles players. Since we do not have enough number of good singles players, we are not being able to qualify for the elite group. Amritraj hopes to see Indian tennis growing its popularity: I know that the expectations will be high.

Tennis in the country needs a fillip for a better standard. Our team will do its best in that direction. Concrete plans will be firmed up shortly. There is a growing interest in tennis not just in Chennai but in the districts too.

We have to take the sport forward and unearth more talent. I wish to have more tournaments and importantly produce more singles players. Djokovic won his 15th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open defeating Rafael Nadal in a straight-set final.
