The 1987 Wimbledon champion believes that the 20-time Grand Slam winner is a freak of nature. The Australian thinks that the Swiss is a particular case in tennis for his great talent.
As quoted by Express, Cash said: Often, single-handed backhand guys usually take a while to develop some strength. Denis Shapovalov is a pretty skinny kid. Federer is skinny but his timing… Lets take Federer out of that as hes a freak.
Hes a freak of nature, we know that. Some of the single-handed backhand guys have to go a long way back to give themselves a little bit more time. Thats the case for Gasquet or Stan Wawrinka, but Stan is strong enough.
Look at the size of him. He can stand up there a bit but typically they have to stand a bit further back and work their way up the court. Dominic Thiem is a classic example. He stands a long way back, he has an unbelievable backhand but it gives him half a second longer to pick the ball up and to take the big swing.
Federer who was the defending champion at the Australian Open lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round. Following his loss, Federer dropped to the sixth place in the ATP rankings. He will next play the Dubai Open in February.
Tsitsipas reached the Australian Open semi-final where he lost to Rafael Nadal. Nadal lost to Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. Djokovic who won his seventh Australian Open title beat Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. This was Djokovics 15th Grand Slam title.
