Philip Brook: 'Davis Cup, Laver Cup, ATP Cup – way too many team events'

.

Also, the answer from the ATP side of the tennis globe has made further confusions in the already packed tennis season, with the first edition of the ATP Cup ready to take place between January 3-12, 2020. With the Laver Cup scheduled for September, the mens calendar has more team competitions than ever before and only the ATP Cup will offer the ATP points, leaving the other two to chase the best players with some other methods (read, money).

Brook is not particularly happy about the fact the three events are not working together but he thinks they would all have agreed that there are too many team competitions in mens tennis at the moment, especially knowing the fact that five weeks separate Davis Cup and ATP Cup! With seven prominent organizers (four Majors, ATP, ITF and WTA), the Tour lacks cohesion and one government body above them all that would take care for the right decisions and what is the best for both the fans and the players.

It makes no sense organizing tennis calendar in the way tennis is organizing it, . I think nobody agrees with each of the people involved in Laver Cup, Davis Cup and now the ATP Cup.

And all of them would agree that there are too many team events. It makes no sense having the Davis Cup at the end of November and the ATP Cup in the first week of January – theyre literally five weeks apart and probably both tournaments wont do very well because of it.

What actually seems to be missing is enough goodwill in the system to enable that to change. There isnt a governing body for the sport and that is the route of this problem. There are seven stakeholders, the four Grand Slams, ATP, WTA, and ITF, and those seven organizations operate marginally independently of each other so they have made decisions that suit them and dont suit other people – thats the issue weve faced.

The ranking system has to be right up there as well because it cannot be right that the new Davis Cup will not have ranking points and yet this new tournament that is part-owned by ATP five weeks later, will. The reason behind that is because of who owns the ranking system, and that is nonsense, I think.
