Rising American star Tennys Sandgren is happy to see that his hard work is paying off. The 27-year-old saw off promising Briton Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-2 in the mens ASB Classic final to win his maiden ATP title in Auckland.
Sandgren showed a great form in Auckland as he didnt lose a single set in five matches played this week. The American also beat Maximilian Marterer, Marco Cecchinato, Leonardo Mayer and Philipp Kohlschreiber. Sandgren enjoyed a breakthrough season on the Tour last year, which started with a surprise Australian Open quarter-final showing.
Sandgren, now ranked at No. 63 in the world, achieved his career-high ranking of No. 47 last year. He is now set for his new career-high ranking of No. 41 in the world. A lot of work, a lot of training and a lot of sacrifice goes into even making the final.
To get a win, Im kind of speechless, Sandgren said after beating Norrie, per The Age. Im just grateful to be able to play and compete. Ive dealt with some injuries so playing well feels really good.
It helps to serve well, it makes up for some of my other shortcomings. A confident Sandgren will now be hoping to continue his good form at Melbourne Park. The American has been drawn to meet Japans Yoshihito Nishioka in the Australian Open first round.
