Australian Open: Yastremska and Venus win. Muguruza beats Konta after 3 am!

After two hours and 42 minutes, the 18th seed Garbine Muguruza took down Johanna Konta 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 after just two breaks of serve in the entire match. Both players served above 70% and almost nothing could separate them on the first or second serve, with Muguruza winning just three points more in the end.

Hitting 41 winners and 19 unforced errors, the Spaniard had to play against only two break points, fending them off to control her initial shot perfectly and mount the pressure on the other side of the net. Konta gave her best to prolong the match as much as possible, firing more winners than her rival but also much more errors, losing serve twice from five chances she gave to the Spaniard and finishing on the losing side after a spectacular fight.

The opening set was decided in the very first game when Muguruza fashioned the lead and she served well in the remaining games to close the set 6-4. They both sailed through service games in the second set after saving three break points in total, with Konta securing the tie break 7-3 to force the deciding set and prolong the match into the middle of the night.

They saved the best for the last, pushing each other to the limits with one good hold after another in set number three before Garbine made one final push to secure a break in game 12 that propelled her over the finish line, reaching the third round here for the fifth time in six years.
