EU to give debit cards to refugees in Turkey
Christos Stylianides: ‘They will be able to buy what they need to put bread on the table.’
The European Union will provide refugees in Turkey with debit cards to cover the cost of basic needs, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Christos Stylianides announced Thursday.
The scheme, worth €348 million, is part of the €3 billion aid package the EU has pledged to Turkey to help Ankara care for more than 3 million Syrian refugees. The cash is part of the deal Turkey and the EU struck in March in exchange for Ankara curbing the flow of refugees to the EU.
The most vulnerable refugees in need of humanitarian assistance will receive an electronic debit card with a monthly allowance transferred to the card, Stylianides said at a press conference in Brussels. He did not say how much money will each card be charged with every month.
The humanitarian scheme, the Cypriot commissioner said, was developed in cooperation with the U.N. World Food Program as well as Turkish ministers and the Turkish Red Crescent. It is set to start next month.
The allowance on the debit card will help refugees “buy what they need to put bread on the table, to provide a roof for their families and to send their children to school instead of being forced to send them to work,” Stylianides said.
