Richard Gasquet pulls out of Montpellier, set to undergo surgery this week

French tennis star Richard Gasquet wont be opening his 2019 campaign anytime soon as he has withdrawn from the Open Sud de France in Montpellier. The 32-year-old is set to undergo a surgery on his groin this Thursday, per Midi Libre.

The Frenchman has been dealing with a groin issue for quite some time. Gasquet, ranked at No. 26 in the world, hasnt played since the Rolex Paris Masters. The former world No. 7 was forced to skip the Davis Cup final against Croatia and the opening Grand Slam of the 2019 season, Australian Open.

Gasquet hoped to return to competitive action at one of his favorite stops on the tour — Montpellier. The Frenchman has had lots of success at the Montpellier event so far in his career, having reached six finals in eight appearances.

The 32-year-old is a three-time Montpellier champion and a three-time runner-up at the tournament respectively. In his Montpellier debut in 2010, Gasquet made the round-of-16 before he made the quarter-final in his second appearance two years later.

Gasquet has since made six consecutive finals at the Montpellier event. The Frenchmans series of seven consecutive Montpellier appearances is also set to come to an end. Losing home-favorite Gasquet will certainly be a big blow for the tournament organizers.
