Tennis legend John Newcombe has urged Lleyton Hewitt to take the high ground and continue nurturing Australias next generation the way he likes it. Bernard Tomic recently spoke about how Hewitt has been a bad captain and needs to go away.
Hes ruined the system, Tomic said after his first-round Australian Open loss to Marin Cilic. Matt Ebden too raised concerns about Hewitts captaincy recently, saying, theres clearly some issues that need to be addressed with the players and Tennis Australia, with Davis Cup and the players and the group as a whole.
Newcombe commended Hewitt for rewarding deserving players with Cup selection – and grand slam wildcards – rather than picking players on reputation. I think Lleytons doing an unbelievable job, Newcombe told AAP.
I said to Lleyton the other day: Things that are being said and all that, take the high ground. You dont have to defend yourself. Everyone sees what youre doing out there.
Youre busting your arse, youve got a great group of young people working for you that are all working at 100 per cent. They all love you, they respect what youre doing for them and, if people want to bad name you, well okay thats their opinion.
The general public can see what Lleytons doing, but every time Bernie gets a microphone he attacks Tennis Australia or someone in it. I would beat Serena Williams 6-3 6-2, says ATP player
