Brad Shepard first reported on Saturday that Vince McMahon is personally funding a separate entity from WWE called Alpha Entertainment. His plan is to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football.
As seen on multiple mainstream media outlets, the news led to many speculating that the XFL would be returning. In an update on this, Alpha Entertainment applied to trademark “URFL” in September. Also, VKM Ventures applied to trademark “United Football League”, “UFL”, and “For the Love of Football” in September.

WWE issued the following statement after news reports surfaced regarding the potential return of the XFL:
“Vince McMahon has established and is personally funding a separate entity from WWE, Alpha Entertainment, to explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football. Mr. McMahon has nothing further to announce at this time.”
The XFL only had one season, which took place in 2001 and was produced by WWE and NBC. It took place during the NFL off-season and was promoted as having fewer rules and encouraging rougher play than other major leagues.
