Born as normal as any other kid, Robert Wadlow was born on 22 February, 1918 to Harold and Addie Wadlow of Alton, Illinois in the United States. However, as he grew at an unbelievable rate soon after his birth, the unexpected changes were visible. By the age of 5 and as tall as 1.63m (5 ft 4 in), he was wearing clothes designed for a 17-year-old. When last measured in 1940, he was 8 ft 11.1 inches tall.

1. A hyperactive pituitary gland fueled Robert Wadlow’s extraordinary growth.
2. At the age of 13, Robert became the world’s tallest Boy Scout where his uniform and sleeping bag was specially made according to his height.
3. He broke the record of the world’s tallest man when he turned 18 reaching as high as 2.53 meters (8 ft 4 in).
4. By the age of 21 weighing 90 kgs (200 pounds), he outgrew and outweighed his own father when he was 187cm (6 ft 2 in) tall.

5. His shoe size was a huge (47 cm long), he had an arm span of 2.88 m (9ft 5.75 in), and his hands measured 32.4 cm (12.75 in) from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger.
6. He consumed about 8000 calories on a daily basis- more than three times the amount recommended for average-sized males.
7. Later in his life, due to weakness and lack of sensation in legs, he got leg braces and a cane to walk.
8. In 1940, a faulty brace rubbing against his ankle caused a blister, which became badly infected.
9. On July 15, 1940, Robert passed away at the age of 22. When he was last measure his height was 8 feet, 11.1 inches.
10. Robert’s body was returned to his hometown and buried in a 1,000-pound casket which was carried by a dozen pallbearers and eight assistants.
