After Managing Waste And Tackling Water Crisis, This NGO Wants To Plant 1.5 Million Trees

Citizens in most metropolitan cities are choking because of bad, polluted air, except those in Coimbatore. Siruthuli – an NGO in the city is dedicated to cleaning the environment in every possible way.

They’re managing water, turning the land green and ensuring that no waste is tossed around the city leading to diseases. That said, this NGO is deploying multiple initiatives to ensure that Coimbatore is safe for its people.

As part of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s ‘Pasumai Payanam’, they have planted thousands of trees across the city. The mission basically demanded everyone to plant one tree each, so the 1.5 million population would lead to 1.5 million trees being planted.

  • Over the years, the organization has led and encouraged people to participate in mass plantation drives. They first find the land that can be used for plantation and then seek partnership from private or public organizations.

They also reach out to schools, institutes and organizations for higher support and use the Miyawaki technique of plantation.

Furthermore, many of their drives have happened with school children and inside the school campuses, so as to educate them about the benefits and build a better tomorrow. They run a program ‘Seed to Sapling’ where kids are given sees, soil and other materials to nurture a plant on their own.

Once the planted saplings cross the height of 4 feet, they are used for the plantation drive. So far, they have nurtured 6 lakh trees in and around Coimbatore.

Other than this, they are also keeping a close watch on the city’s water crisis, and guaranteeing that everyone knows about their job and role. Siruthuli is also participating in waste management, teaching people about recycle, reuse and reduce.

If one NGO can do so much, imagine what we could do if we all decided to follow in their footsteps.
