Alexander Zverev gives verdict after his disappointing Australian Open loss

German tennis star Alexander Zverev was straight honest wheh asked what he thinks of his Australian Open round-of-16 performance against Canadian Milos Raonic. No. 16 seed Raonic beat the fourth-seeded German easier than expected 6-1 6-1 7-6 (5).

The Canadian got broken in the opening game of the match but then stormed back by winning eight games in a row to take a 6-1 2-0 lead. The German stopped Raonics run in the third game of the second set but the Canadian then once again went on a run as he won five games in a row.

Raonic failed to convert any of his two match points in the 10th game of the third but still got the job done in the tie-break. I mean, I played bad. The first two sets especially I played horrible. Yeah, I mean, its just tough to name on one thing.

I didnt serve well, didnt play well from the baseline. Against a quality player like him, its tough to come back from that, Zverev said post-match. Zverev hoped to open his 2019 campaign with a maiden Grand Slam title after finishing the last season by conquering the Nitto ATP Finals.

Yeah, a little bit. For sure, I didnt have a very long off-season, didnt have a lot of rest. But, you know, this is us as tennis players. Im happy how the season ended. Im not going to I wouldnt want it the other way, Zverev admitted, when asked if theres any sort of hangover from that.

Zverev insists a disappointing loss doesnt mean the end of the world. Right now Im not happy, but Im not depressed, either (smiling). Its fine. Its a tennis match. I have learned to take tennis matches as tennis matches and not the end of the world.

If I would think its the end of the world every time I lose a tennis match, I would be very depressed about 15 to 20 times a year. So Im not going to do that, Zverev added. Also read: Grigor Dimitrov reflects on disappointing Australian Open round-of-16 loss
