Couple gets E. coli on trip to Dominican Republic

A Florida couple warns that the Dominican Republic is a “dangerous place to go” after contracting E. coli during a recent visit.

Larry and Ronnie Adelman booked a trip this month to Punta Cana for their 50th wedding anniversary, but it didn’t end up being the romantic destination they hoped, news station WJLA reported.

Four days into the vacation, Larry began suffering symptoms of the foodborne bacterial infection, including severe cramps and weight loss.

“I was as sick as a dog. I couldn’t sleep five minutes after I went to the bathroom — everything was just pouring out of me,” Larry told the news station.

The Boca Raton couple feared the worst as other tourists began to report cases of fatal illnesses — including a Maryland man who suddenly died after experiencing an upset stomach on a July 2018 vacation to the same resort town.

“I was scared, frightened! Especially knowing what was going on there,” Ronnie told the news station.

When they returned home, the couple went to the doctor and were diagnosed with E. coli infections.

The infections can be prevented with cooking but remains a risk if the food isn’t properly prepared, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In some cases, E. coli can lead to serious illness, kidney failure and even death.

“The message is stay away from Punta Cana, especially the Dominican Republic until they get to the bottom of what’s going on,” Larry told news station WPBF.

The E. coli case comes amid a disturbing string of deaths under mysterious circumstances among tourists in the DR, including in Punta Cana.
