Mayor Bill de Blasio took NY1 to task on Tuesday for “sidelining” veteran anchor Roma Torre during Wednesday’s coverage of the US women’s soccer victory parade amid a discrimination suit against the network.

“Keeping one of our city’s best journalists on the sidelines during such a special day is an insult to New Yorkers,” tweeted Hizzoner, hours after Torre appealed in an open letter to the mayor to condemn NY1.
“@RomaTorre is a tireless advocate who’s worked hard to earn the trust of New Yorkers — she belongs at this parade,” continued de Blasio, who regularly appears on the channel’s “Inside City Hall” program. “Shame on @NY1.”
Torre revealed earlier Tuesday that she would not be anchoring live coverage of the parade down Lower Manhattan’s Canyon of Heroes, despite being assigned to the victory parade the last time the USWNT won the World Cup in 2015.
“Of course, this is retaliation and a further demonstration of NY1’s complete failure to take women’s issues seriously,” she claimed.
Torre and four fellow female journalists at the network filed suit against NY1’s parent company, Charter Communications, last month, claiming rampant age- and gender-discrimination.
Charter said in a statement that while Torre will not be covering the parade route, she’s not being replaced either — NY1 will send reporters, but no on-the-ground anchor, to cover the revelry.
