Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday nominated the deputy commissioner for the city’s Department of Veterans’ Services to head the Taxi and Limousine Commission.
The mayor said in a statement that the nomination of Jeffrey D. Roth will be submitted to the City Council this month for its advice and consent.
“I am thrilled to nominate Jeff to head the Taxi and Limousine Commission,” said de Blasio.
“His depth of experience in city government will serve New Yorkers well as we continue to root out practices that prey on medallion owners and help hardworking drivers feed their families.”
De Blasio added that he looks forward to Roth’s help on the growth of their wheelchair-accessible fleet and efforts to combat discrimination and service refusals.
Acting TLC Commissioner Bill Heinzen called Roth “a strong leader who knows the industry inside and out.”
“I have every confidence that he will help the TLC continue to succeed in all its important work,” Heinzen said. “I look forward to working with him.”
Roth said he was honored to be nominated to lead the TLC.
“I look forward to working to fulfill the Mayor’s vision for improving the health and vitality of this industry; and working to protect the drivers, passengers, and visitors of NYC who rely on these services every day,” he said.
Roth was previously the deputy commissioner for Policy and External Affairs at the TLC.
An attorney who represents medallion owners griped that a former TLC honcho was the wrong person for the job.
“You have an agency complicit in the collapse of the medallion values and you bring back an agency guy,” said the attorney, Richard Lipsky.
