El Chapo’s mom: I’m cleared to see my son, and I want to bring enchiladas

Convicted drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman could be getting a taste of home-cooking — his elderly mother says she’s been cleared to travel to the US to visit him and that she’d like to come bearing enchiladas.

Consuelo Loera, 91, and her two daughters received clearance at the US embassy in Mexico City to visit her notorious narcotics-pusher son, currently awaiting sentencing for helming a sprawling, blood-soaked cartel that dealt in the billions, Loera told The Independent.

Loera added that she’d like to bring her 62-year-old son his favorite meal, enchiladas, presumably to boost the down-in-the-dumps drug lord’s spirits as he adjusts to life at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Correctional Center.

The federal government neither confirmed nor denied to The Independent whether Loera had been cleared to see her son for the first time since 2015, but Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has lobbied for the reunion.

Guzman is set to be sentenced later this month following his February conviction and faces life behind bars at a federal facility to be determined.
