The man who played one of New York’s favorite TV cops for 12 seasons, the gruff yet compassionate Elliot Stabler of “Law & Order,” has taken up another sort of law enforcement role on Hulu’s jarring adaptation “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Earlier this year, it was announced that Christopher Meloni (“Law & Order,” “Happy”) would be joining the cast in the show’s highly anticipated third season. He plays the charismatic Commander Winslow alongside Elizabeth Reaser (“The Haunting Of Hill House”) as his wife, Mrs. Winslow, who both quickly befriend Gilead’s most influential couple, Commander Fred and Joy Waterford.
The Post sat down with Ann Dowd (“The Leftovers”), who plays re-educator Aunt Lydia in this dystopian society, to talk about Season 3. She shares fans’ excitement over Meloni’s debut.

“Doll!” Dowd exclaims to Post entertainment reporter Jenna Yaches. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw him — nearly died.”
Dowd, who has worked with Meloni in the past on “Law & Order,” says the seasoned television actor is perfect for the part.
“You’d think he was born to play a commander,” she says. “He’s right on the money.”
For two seasons, Meloni starred as yet another cop in SyFy’s bizarre whodunnit “Happy,” as disgraced detective Nick Sax, based on a graphic novel of the same name. Following last month’s finale, the network announced this week that the show would not return for a third season.
“The Handmaid’s Tale” season 3 is now available to stream on Hulu.
