Speaking on Eurosport the seven-time Grand Slam winner said he was impressed by Novak Djokovics dominant win over Lucas Pouille in the Australian Open semifinals. Wilander said Djokovic was unfazed by cooler night conditions: Everyone cooled down, not Novak Djokovic I would say.
That was incredible. I was out there watching it live from the stance, I was on the side of the court and you cannot get a ball past him, he moves so well on this court. I cant even explain how good that is. I dont know how you play tennis to beat somebody that plays that well.
Analyzing the match in detail, Wilander added: When he serves that well you dont have a chance to attack his second serve. For Pouille, he would have had to serve 80-85% first serves and he still gets beaten, and maybe it looked like he was a little bit lost during the match.
He played very quickly between points but obviously when his own service games he can control that and nobody likes to play quickly when you serve nobody likes to play quickly when Djokovic serves at his face. He serves faster and faster and literally the shot clock was at 18 seconds at times, he needs to slow down and he needs to play with a different purpose from the beginning of the match, so maybe spin a serve with the win because it was quite of windy out there, but when you play a semis against Novak Djokovic there are no more matches on Melbourne Park.
You are the only match and I have been through these situations and you are worried about winning games, first. You want to break that zero, that looks so bad, and that took the whole of the first set so if his nerves never had a chance to calm down and start thinking about winning points.
He was trying to win games first and then you start, and thats a big problem. ALSO READ: Djokovic would beat Roger Federer in Australian Open final – Evert
