“Out of respect to my then- girlfriend, who was down there, I never told that story,” he said. “There was a knock on the door after curfew … and it happened to be a lady from New York. I think somebody sent her because when we were there, she started chuckling after a while. She said, ‘my dad.. he’d go crazy if he knew I was here.’ I said, ‘why’s that,’ she said, ‘Well, he’s from Baltimore.’ She was from Baltimore.
“The I figured they’d tried to mess me up,” he continued. “When I gave it thought afterwards, of course, though, I thought that somebody was up to something, I though it might have been some wiseguys that went the other way.”
Namath famously drew the ire of all of Baltimore by guaranteeing the win three days prior, so the idea that someone would send a woman to his room the night beforehand is a possibility.
Regardless, none of it seemed to matter as Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 208 yards and picked up MVP honors in the 16-7 win.
