The fiancée of a missing California automotive journalist says he texted her about his treacherous journey test-driving a motorcycle in the mountains before he vanished, according to a report.
David “Davey” Johnson, 44, was last heard from by his fiancée, Jaclyn Trop, around 5 a.m. June 5 before he disappeared in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, ABC News reported.
“I left the summit about dark, which had me worried about ice so I was going on no miles an hour for a while, and then I was just so tired that I stopped to rest a few times,” Johnson wrote in the text. “But I had a great time before it got dark. That part of the Sierra is just stupidly spectacular.”
Johnson then apologized for previously going dark during his two-day assignment for Motorcyclist magazine.
“Anyway, I’m so sorry I worried you,” he said in the early-morning text. “Yes, I’m okay and alive, but I am WIPED. I love you very much, Jaclyn Sara Trop!”
Trop reported her fiance missing two days later to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. She said she never goes “more than 12 hours without talking to him.”
His motorcycle was later recovered the same day near a rest stop in Mokelumne Hill. The following day, his clothes, cellphone and laptop were discovered near the Mokelumne River, officials said.
A massive search is underway for the missing journalist as authorities canvass the Calaveras County region using boats, a helicopter and six dogs, according to ABC News.

The sheriff’s office said they have no reason to suspect foul play.
